We walked the wall Day 10, 07/12/18

We walked the wall at Lucca.  If you have been there or heard about Lucca, you know what I am talking about.  It is said that no trip to Tuscany would be complete with out a trip to Lucca.  We left Cortona this morning enroute to La Spezia.  This will be our base while exploring the Cinque Terre, 5 Italian cliff side villages along the Mediterranean Sea.  Being the tourists we are, we made time to stop in Lucca.
Lucca is a city on the Serchio river in Italy’s Tuscany region. It’s known for the well-preserved Renaissance walls encircling its historic city center and its cobblestone streets. Broad, tree-lined pathways along the tops of these massive 16th- and 17th-century ramparts are popular for strolling and cycling.  Our stop here was well worth our time.  Another beautiful city.  We arrived just as the July Rock and Roll festival was going on.  Ringo Starr is the head liner.  We did not see Ringo, nor any of the other stars.  I suspect they were still in bed.  So we had a lunch in an outdoor cafe, did some sightseeing, a little shopping, and walked the wall.  Afterwards,  we continued on to La Spezia.
Situated minutes to the east of Cinque Terre by train,it's not only an affordable place to overnight if you're heading to the Cinque Terre, it's really worthy of at least a wanderWe checked in here at the Casa Dane and then took the train to the first village on our list, Vernazza for a quick tour and dinner.  Afterwards,  we took a train back to La Spezia and turned in.  Tomorrow..the Cinque Terre.

  1. Lucca is still protected by it's walls just as is Cortona. Both cities passed ordances protecting structures within the walls and placing new things outside. The glacis of Lucca is earthen to absorb incoming artillery. Beautiful city and walking the wall gives one great insights into it.. You guys are doing great things and appreciate the picrures!
