Today turned out to be very interesting. Our itinerary called for breakfast in Menerbes. Today was market day in Menerbes so we decided to walk to town. An easy walk, 1 1/4 kilometers to town. We went into town, had coffee and croissants at a local restaurant. After we finished we toured the market to see what treasures we needed. One shop had rotisserie chickens with roasted potatoes. It was decided this would be our dinner tonight, a French hen. When we finished the market, Amanda bought the French hen and the potatoes along with a loaf of bread. We headed back to the villa. Walking. I mentioned it was 1 1/4 KM? Amanda carried the bread, I carried the chicken and the potatoes. Did I mention the path back to the villa was up a very long, steep rise that was 1 1/4 km's long. The clerk should have double bagged the chicken and the potatoes. Harry offered to take the chicken. I said no, I had it. Amanda carried the bread. Halfway up the mountain, the plastic bag started coming apart. I suspect it was because of the heat from the chicken and potatoes that had just been taken off the rotisserie. It was hot. It was not double bagged. It started leaking. The bag was coming apart. The chicken was hot. I tried to carry it in my arms. That did not work. It was hot. Amanda said when she walks, she carries 2 lb weights in her hands. I had 4 lbs of hot chicken and potatoes in my hands. All of this started halfway in the walk back. No car, no bus, just a walk in the park. I had grease all over me. Our dinner was in my arms. Our dinner was in jeopardy. I finally made it back and turned the chicken over to Linda and Amanda and then had to change clothing before we could continue the day's events.
When this ordeal ended we drove to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. This village is known as the Island City or the Venice of Provence. You can imagine the delight that Harry and I felt when we were told that today was market day in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. We were so happy. This is a small town that is known for its many antique shops. It also saw its early beginnings in medieval time period. As early as the 12th century the rivers around the town, in conjunction with the ramparts provided city defense until 1795. We had lunch by one of the rivers flowing through town. I had a great lunch of whole sea bass.
We moved on and stopped at several wineries for wine tasting. It was kind of like being at Costco. We had thought of ordering wine and having it sent back home, but dismissed that idea because of archaic Alabama liquor laws and continued on to the next winery. Tomorrow has the promise of another interesting day.
