Day 14, Kenai Peninsula 07/24/2010

To days journey started off in Anchorage. After we got up, we went downstairs for breakfast. As it was rather cool today, I wore my Auburn sweatshirt. I placed my order for breakfast and the cook asked if I was an Auburn fan. Certainly, I told him. He said he was an Alabama fan and they were going to kick our you know what. I told him that I had travelled to 5000 miles, to the other side of the continent and just can't get away from it.

After breakfast went to the Alaska Arts and Crafts Festival. Among the items they had for sale, several caught my eye. They had salmon chowder, salmon quesadilla, salmon burgers, salmon cakes, halibut chunks, Bering Sea scallops and much more.

We got into the car and headed west. Our drive took us on a winding road, along the coast, through 2 separate mountain passes. The scenery was simply amazing.

While on the route we stopped at Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. It was located near the Portage Glacier. Animals who are injured in the wild are brought here for treatment and recovery. It is also where we saw our first grizzly. (Not on a postcard) They fed him a moose leg.

We left there and continued on to Soldatna. Our final destination in Alaska. We are located in a cabin on a secluded lake near there. We will be here until Tuesday, then start our return journey.

The weather today is cloudy, temps 48 to 52 and a light rain. Well I shall sign off now. I am going to grill a steak, while maintaining my eternal vigilance, searching for moose and Bear's.

We did not use the bear spray on the grizzly in the enclosure. There were too many people watching.

Jerry

P.S. I was able to listen to the Finbaum Show all through Canada. When we got to Alaska, we lost the satellite signal. Linda is so happy.
